The EUROPEAN COMMISSION recently published a communication promoting Digital Innovation Hubs (DIH) as ecosystems that support bottom-up innovation in a specific industrial sector benefiting of the
Thessaloniki Innovation Zone (TIZ) in cooperation with European Commission - DG Connect, “Directorate General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology”, have the honor to invite you to the event “Digital Innovation Hubs –The AgroFood case” that takes place on Tuesday, March the 14th, 10:00 - 14:00.
The EC recently published a communication promoting Digital innovation hubs (DIH) as ecosystems that support bottom-up innovation in a specific industrial sector benefiting of the competitive advantage offered by digital technologies. Ideally such hubs consist of SMEs, large industries, startups, researchers, accelerators, and investors. They aim to create the best conditions for long-term business success for all involved. The EC plans to focus 500M€ investment from Horizon 2020 on digital innovation hubs and mobilise an estimated 5 B€ for regional investment. The workshop will focus on Agrofood and explain to the local innovation ecosystem the notion of DIHs presenting European best case examples and addressing a range of questions, indicatively: what are the main characteristics of the innovation hubs? How are they created? How the EC can help? What works well and what does not? How do the hubs achieve sustainability?
The audience will consist of members of the local innovation ecosystem of Agrofood, i.e. farmers, industry representatives, academics, researchers and politicians.
The event is part of the initiative ‘Thessaloniki Innovation Friendly Destination’ and is under the auspices of the Ministry of Economy and Development, the Ministry of Interior (Macedonia - Thrace), the Region of Central Macedonia and the Municipality of Thessaloniki. The cooperation between OK!Thess and KEMEL continued with a second workshop on 6 March 2018 from 10:00 to 17:00. This workshop was again based on the Business Model Canvass – a key tool for preparing a successful start-up. While the first workshop focused on the “right hand side” of the canvas and thus on marketing aspects, the second one was on financial issues – the second most important reason for a startup’s failure (after “no market need”).
The workshop consisted of two parts.
In the first part, basic notions and tools of financial analysis (P&L, Cash Flow, Break-even etc) were presented and their usefulness in validating the BMC’s assumptions. An exercise session aimed at better understanding followed. After a break, SWOT analysis, brainstorming and other techniques which may have an effect in the resolution of a startup’s early problems were developed.
In the second part, selected teams from OK!Thess presented their BMC and in particular the financial side. Discussion followed after which fixed teams of KEMEL mentors and startuppers attempted to address the weakpoints of the BMC’s identified in the discussion by means of the techniques presented in the first part.

Is negotiating simply a talent that some have and some not? Do those that drive a hard bargain always achieve what they want?
In reality, a successful negotiation is the result of techniques and skill that develop with time and practice. In the modern entrepreneurial environment in which a startup is called continuously to cope with the challenges of cooperation in the team and the speed of the market the entrepreneur is called to negotiate almost on a permanent basis. Negotiating skills may push the team to work more productively without internal problems but also to achieve its goals when negotiating with investors, clients or external collaborators.
On 24 February 2017, OK!Thess organises an interactive introductory seminar on negotiations. Specifically, the participants will have the chance to examine issues related to negotiations inside the team, such as cooperation between its members but also matters that relate to negotiations with investors and clients in two interlinked sessions. Over 26000 programmers from all over the world participated in 4th Google Hashcode – Google’s international competition inviting programmers from Europe, Africa and the Middle East to address one of the problems that Google software engineers address on a daily basis.
In the evening of Thursday 23 February the contestants gathered in the Google Hashcode Hubs around the world where in teams of 2 to 4 people attempted to optimise the way that the company uses to distribute videos to the users of YouTube.
The problem was announced at 18:30 and participants had at their disposal real data from Google and exactly 5 hour to propose an optimal solution. OK!Thess’s hub hosted 4 teams (MAO, Draxis, Team01, LinCoders) consisting of professional programmers and students. The total of 13 participants worked in a jazz rhythm until 23:30.
Explaining the problem, members of the Draxis team said: “Google take a regional approach when regulating movement to its servers. If it is detected that the users in region “Greece” watch a specific video often, this should be stored at a server close to Greece to serve users with a minimum of resources”

Gamification has been a buzzword for some time now both in corporate and gaming circles. What is gamification though and why are people talking about it? Gamification is the application of game-design elements and game principles in non-game contexts. The reason people talk about it is because it helps organisations boost their customers and employees motivation and engagement. Gamification is very interesting for startups because it’s something new that can add value to your products and services.
Vasilis Gkogkidis works full time at GAMIFICATION+, a gamification company based in Brighton, UK. He is an international speaker, consultant and trainer on gamification. He is also the official ambassador of GamFed (International Gamification Federation) in Greece where he is trying to spread good practices on gamification.

A outstandingly useful and interesting session between the “Centre of Volunteer Managers of Greece”, the teams hosted in OK!Thess and some other startups and potential startups in the city took place on January the 12th.
A four man team from, all top managers of prestigious companies, braved the freezing temperatures and the consequences of our foggy airport and arrived to deliver a full idea-load of their collective experience on the basics of startups and entrepreneurship.
The meeting was organised in three parts: Firstly, the Business Model Canvas was presented, with an extensive analysis of its “right hand part” of the canvas - there, where so many startups fail. Identifying the market (the customer segments) and ensuring value in their propositions are the key initial elements considering that 80% of Apps are used only once, and 42% of startups fail because of lack of demand for their brilliant, or otherwise, idea. Together with the importance of identifying the channels of communication with the market and ensuring good customer relations in advance it was obvious that the session would concentrate on important principles (and sometimes tricks) of marketing and that was done brilliantly by the team of four.
Secondly, the teams hosted at OK!Thess presented their business ideas and these were discussed by all and especially the KEMEL team identifying potential problems for solution.
Thirdly, four tables were set up, each chaired by one of the KEMEL mentors with a rapporteur taking the form of a “clinic”. The problems identified in each of the four teams who presented their canvas were discussed identifying the avenues to their solution. Each table had a rapporteur and conclusions were reported in a last sitting.
It was clear from the discussions during the event as well as in its aftermath that the teams found very high value in the contribution of KEMEL and the consensus opinion is that we all wish this to be the beginning of an ever closer cooperation. As the coordinator of OK!Thess said paraphrasing Rick from Casablanca, he hope that this might be “the beginning of a beautiful friendship”.

The annual Orange Grove Agri-Food Entrepreneurship Masterclass will take place this year for the first time in Thessaloniki on 11-14 November 2016. Participants will be teams/startups with activities in the fields of agri-food, agro/bio-technology, rural tourism, and related services.
Organizer is the Netherlands Embassy in Athens, as part of their entrepreneurship initiative Orange Grove. Invited organisation to conduct the masterclass is the company Startlife engaged in the development of entrepreneurship in the agri-food sector in the Netherlands. Startlife belongs to The Food Valley region, centered at Wageningen UR (University and Research Center), which is one of the most prominent agri-food and nutrition research centers in Europe. Co-organizer of the event is the non-profit company AgriEnt AgriEntrepreneurship / Rural Entrepreneurship, which organizes AgriEnt Accelerator, the unique in Greece business acceleration program (start-up, scale-up) in the fields of agri-food, agro-technologies, agri-tourism. The event is held with the kind support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, the co-working space OK!Thess of the Municipality of Thessaloniki and the company Tropos Branding. With great success the Business Angels Forum III took place in Thessaloniki at OK!Thess, Thessaloniki’s new pre-incubator, on Tuesday, November 1, 2016. The event was organized by Atlantis Consulting SA and Innovation Farm and was supported by HeBAN and other stakeholders of the regional ecosystem. The closed event addressed startups, investors and supporters. Fourteen startups and innovative enterprises presented their business plans in a pitching session in front of investors and the board that consisted of representatives from various investment organizations and funds of the region. The event started with welcome notes by Mr. Angelos Manglis, CEO of Atlantis Consulting SA, Mr. Argyris Spyridis, Co-Founder of Innovation Farm and Mr. Simon Bensasson, Coordinator of OK!Thess.
Before the pitching sessions Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis and Mr. Andreas Baresel-Bofinger, both Co-Founders of HeBAN, presented to the audience a presentation entitled: “Best Practices in Angel Investing”. They started their presentation giving some information about the role of HeBAN in the Greek startup ecosystem and presenting some of the past and forthcoming activities. Following, they pointed out the crucial role of Business Angels in the society, supported this view by providing some numbers derived from latest EBAN’s surveys. In addition, they presented the investment procedure that every Angel Investor follows from the time he decides to invest till the end (exit) and finally, they suggested some practices that lead to success. The event was also followed online by a large number of investors and Business Angels.
At the end, investors had the opportunity to discuss with the teams and there was time for networking.

The organisation of Climathon in Thessaloniki is an opportunity to open for the first time a broad discussion on climate change. The impacts of the phenomenon is gradually becoming evident and adds stress to already existing challenges for the city, from micro-climatic conditions and mobility through to strategic planning and decision making for urban development. Air quality degradation, the increasing frequency of weather extremes, droughts and extreme heat-waves and an apparent shift in seasons are among the manifestations of the phenomenon in the city. Thus it is understood that consequences are going to impair the daily functioning of the city on different levels: from quality of life to urban infrastructure and the use of public space through to mobility, energy and food production and consumption, and waste management.
Inspiring behavioural change to a wide audience of the society will be at the centre of the event’s agenda and, therefore, ideas will be developed around this concept. The development of sustainable and applicable solutions/tools in the city-scale is expected. Collaboration will be promoted during the workshop to create synergies that will help participants to mature innovative feasible solutions, while it will also provide the City with new good practices in the field of urban resilience strategy within the context of the '100 Resilient Cities' initiative in Thessaloniki.
